Here are just some of the young officials who are participating in the Referees Week activities:

Noah Stewart

Age 11
North River Minor Hockey Association
here are two reasons why Noah likes reffing:
1.) Because he loves hockey and thinks its fun to help out the younger kids to learn the rules.
2.) also, it's not to bad to have a little extra money.

Drew Grady

Drew Grady is a second year Level 1 Official in the Kensington Area Minor Hockey Association.

He is a defenseman with the Gulf Storm Bantam AA and enjoys the physical side of the game and taking shots from the point. Drew has played every position including four years as a goaltender. As a result, he understands the game of hockey better than most kids his age, making him a great candidate for refereeing.

Drew's father Chuck is also a member of the PEIHRA and is very proud that his son is following in his footsteps. Drew's mom Heather is a big hockey fan and loves watching her son play and officiate.

“I like refereeing because I get to be in charge and because it gives me extra time on the ice to develop my skating.”

Tyler Cameron

Tyler is a level 2 based out of Summerside. He has been reffing for three years and plays goalie for the AAA Midgets in Summerside. He attends Three Oaks high school and his favorite NHL team is the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Young officials from the Summerside Minor Hockey Association meet the on-ice crew from Sunday’s Maritime Junior A Hockey League game at Credit Union Place in Summerside.

As part of its ongoing effort to promote the craft of hockey officiating, the P.E.I. Hockey Referees Association is celebrating Referees Week throughout the province. The initiative is being facilitated by the association’s executive council and by referees-in-chief in each minor hockey association.

The goal of Referees Week is to connect minor hockey officials with senior officials in the branch and to recognize them for their dedication to the sport. Through the week, dozens of young referees are attending games of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Atlantic University Sport that are taking place on P.E.I. They have the opportunity to meet the game officials, interact with supervision staff and take part in postgame assessments of the on-ice crew.

To promote the initiative and the officials involved, the PEIHRA is including photos of the activities on its website, www.peihra.com. There will also be a listing of several young officials who were selected by their local associations to participate.

Thanks to a partnership with the equipment supplier Force Sports, the PEIHRA is also able to provide gift packages to the participants of Referees Week.

Finally, the Association’s Referee-in-Chief Troy Howatt wishes to thank Pat McIver, General Manager of the Summerside Western Capitals; Ron Annear, Athletic Director at the University of Prince Edward Island and Trent Birt, VP of Operations for the P.E.I. Rocket. These teams have been generous enough to provide tickets for the young officials involved and have contributed to the success of the initiative, which wraps up on Sunday evening.
